Following up on the Wii’s success of the last few years, Microsoft and Sony both come to market this year with their motion controlled offerings.

Kinect

For £130 you can add a Kinect controller to your Xbox 360. This enables you to control Kinect enabled games by just moving around in front of the camera. The duel camera’s, infra red sensor and microphone combine to create a control scheme sensitive enough to accurately detect the movement of each limb.

A lot of the excitement around the launch of Kinect has been directed towards the exuberant party games – Kinect Sports and Dance Central in particular. Being free from a controller, these games have received critical acclaim for taking the experience to the next level. They also promise to be a little bit cheaper than other Xbox 360 games, to entice gamers to rent or play them.

Dance Central in particular looks to offer a unique dance experience that really lets players use their creativity for each move. The Kinect camera works well to detect how accurately and well timed these have been pulled off.

Move

For £75 you can add a Playstation Eye camera and both Move controllers to your Playstation 3. The camera combines with the motion sensors in the two controllers to offer a high fidelity control scheme. A little bit like the Wii-mote and Nun-chuck combination, but as well as being un-tethered this technology also tracks the player with the camera for added accuracy.

If you wanted to play with two players on Move you would need to buy another pair of controllers for £60, bringing the total cost to £135. Because it doesn’t depend on controllers, Kinect can accommodate additional players without extra equipment.

There is more buzz around traditional hard core games for the Move hardware. Sorcery caused quite a stir when it was demoed at E3. Not only did it offer an intriguing new magic system, this was all controlled by simple motions with the move controller. Sports Champion then looks to apply these accurate controls to a sports experience that not only looks more impressive than Wii-Sports but also promises more control fidelity.

Conclusion

Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. Which is right for you to buy depends on how you play games. Party and exercise games look to be more impressive on Kinect. More hardcore and accurate shooting games seem more convincing on Move.

Gormiti: The Lords of Nature! features characters and locations from the popular Gormiti TV show, now airing on Cartoon Network. The action starts as a character named Razzle, while cleaning the library, accidentally knocks some old books into a Portal. These books tumble down to the ‘Island of Gorm’ where a never ending battle is going on between vast armies inspired by the elemental forces of nature. The books eventually land at the feet of Magmion, the evil Lava Gormiti. Magmion reads the book and learns of an old legend which talks about reuniting five sacred amulets which have been scattered across Gorm. Once reunited these amulets allow the holder to open an inter-dimensional portal to Earth! The Lords of Nature need to use all their unique powers to hinder Magmion’s plans and save Earth. The game recreates the beautifully illustrated island of Gorm, where the Lords of Earth, Sea, Air and Forest are charged with stopping the evil Magmion from wreaking havoc.
