ok not as good as the new one out, but still loved playing it, plenty of puzzles etc...A+

A very interesting game at times and if you are interested with puzzle games you will enjoy it. Shoddy graphics and rubbish voice acting ruined the game slightly.

Sherlock Homes Vs Jack the Ripper is the latest major offering from Frogwares who have become known for doing an ongoing Sherlock Holmes series. So let's see what this latest offering has to offer. Well as usual graphics and sound first. Graphically the characters are not very good. In this day and age where computer characters look almost human like, this is very poor. Unless of course the characters were meant to look rather cartoony then in that case they did a great job. Whitechapel looks better. But I guess it's not that difficult to do a brick building well. However it still does look good and there is a sense of atmosphere in the misty streets you walk. As for sound I was disappointed in it. There is no lip sync in this game. The characters just open and close there mouths without really forming any proper words. In some cases the hand gestures and mannerisms of the characters don't match what they are talking about at the time. So you get some dramatic hand gestures when the topic is something as simple as looking at a map but then hardly any drama when speaking of a murder that has just happened. Ok now on to game play. One of the first annoying things to me was that Dr Watson, let me just repeat that word DOCTOR, spends most of his time complaining to Holmes how he feels queasy and close to vomiting when he is confronted with any bodies or injuries. Surely a doctor would be able to cope with this kind of thing, if not then why call himself a doctor? At one point Holmes uses a clay figure to show the extent of one of the victims injuries. Seeing this little clay figure with its little clay body parts removed, made Watson run to the toilet and vomit loudly. The streets of Whitechapel are busy with people moving round going about their business. However hardly any of them are of any use. I saw many times where I talked to someone on the street because I needed directions. The person would stop and say something like 'Lost are you?' and then walk on with no options for dialogue offered. This became such a massive annoyance, all those people walking the streets and 90% were of no use what so ever. Finally the case itself. The case was well done and the puzzles in the game were pretty tough in places which did increase the games lifespan a little. However as Jack the Ripper mystery followers know there were a few people suspected of being the infamous murderer. However in this game Frogwares seem to have decided who Jack was and based the whole game around that point of view, which meant you had no other choices and therefore couldn't make any mistakes. So you then get the annoyance of hearing Holmes say 'No I don't think that's it' (or words to that effect) over and over again. This means the game is driven by the makers and so you are never totally in control. You just follow the story along and solve puzzles. All in all this game has little to offer Sherlock Holmes fans but might prove a bit of a welcome distraction to people who like puzzle solvers. There is no replayability. I give this game a 50.

In fairness despite some dodgy voice acting, the game has quite a few fun puzzles and isn't too hard overall. This will take a couple of days / 7 hours ish to complete.

Great puzzle game & made a nice change from the norm. Some of the puzzles are quite hard so i'd have a walkthrough handy.Easy 1000 gs as well.

A gripping and thoroughly enjoyable story only let down by mediocre graphics and some dodgy voice acting. Easily 10-12hrs of gameplay though, and a great gaming experience with good character depth and well thought out and researched puzzles. The full 1000G can be obtained in 6-7hrs with a walkthrough guide as well.
