just isn't sonic anymore, poor camera angels, and a pretty poor game play don't make for a good game. very disappointed

When Sonic Team said that their next-gen version of Sonic was going to go back to the roots most people were looking forward to seeing the results. Sadly, while the game itself IS a very enjoyable Sonic game its flaws result in a very frustrating Sonic game too. The loading times are terrible, at 32% through the game I have already reached a level where its loaded 4 times breaking up the sense of speed Sonic is famous for. Thats not even the worst of it, when starting any of the optional missons the loading is approx 15 seconds, then you are given a mission objective cut scene followed by another 5-10 second load, before you get to play the game. The same happens when you die too, it loads, cut scene to say you failed and another load. No option to retry, you have to just select it again as normal subject to the above loading, cut scene, loading sequence. It gets VERY tedious after a while if you keep failing the mission as often is the case especially thanks to the overhauled buggy controls. When starting an actual act (the main game missions) its not quite as bad because you dont have to quite the mission each time thanks to your usual supply of lives. However if you lose all your lives during an act you are subject to loading the whole game again and finding the right mirror (teleporters used to start each act) in the city for the act you want. You usually arent too far away but its more tedium than you need especially if you died purely due to the buggy controls again. Buggy controls? Yep, the camera is worse than ever never seemingly to point in quite the right direction or angle to see who is shooting you or where you are going. The camera control on the right stick is inverted and theres no option to change that, in fact theres no options at all other than sound and music volumes. These are pretty major flaws that serves to make the game feel very untested, it feels like its still in beta testing. It will be shame if the PS3 version comes out better than this purely because they rushed the 360 version to market, but I doubt it. Sonic Team have a reputation for making 3D Sonic games buggy like this but usually not quite this bad. Another thing that really puzzles me is any area where you are grinding theres no lock-on mode or button to switch rails anymore like Sonic Heroes had. If you try to jump between rails you are pretty much guaranteed to die because landing on a rail is such an exact science. During some of the faster areas as Sonic I found myself just leaving the console to do its thing because moving the pad would result in missing a rail and it would happily do everything right without any human interaction. Not all the time of course, but certain parts certainly felt like they might as well have been cut scenes. The good. Well, if you excuse all its flaws and as a huge Sonic fan im forced to put up with them, its still a good game. Its a real shame it has such glaring flaws and I really hope they fix the worst of them and issue a patch over Xbox Live because its a fairly good game otherwise. Perhaps not as good as Sonic Adventure but never the less good. Despite its flaws I still find myself coming back to this game far more than I did with Sonic Heroes which just felt too drawn out and boring in its later levels. Also bringing back the city similar to Sonic Adventure is welcome especially as its far more interactive this time around with some battles with Eggmans robots happening right there in the city as well as plenty of little mini-missions which sadly are let down by the loading issues I mentioned above. It has so many flaws its easy to dismiss it as a bad game, many reviews make it look as such but its still good fun, when it works. If you are a Sonic fan you must at least give this a rent. If you are easily frustrated or suffer from bloody pressure problems, it might be safer to give it a miss or else risk throwing the pad through your nice HDTV in frustration.
